Batteries are used by electric utility companies to back up
switchgear equipment. For example, if part of the utility grid is
disabled because of a failed transformer or downed cable, the
switchgear needs to be operable so that switches can bypass the
outage and provide power to other parts of the grid. The batteries
also provide power to other critical control
equipment.
Flooded batteries have been the traditional
choice of electric utilities. However, the obvious benefits of
Valve-regulated, lead-acid (VRLA) batteries are allowing VRLA
batteries to make significant inroads into this market. The
increased safety, reduced maintenance, reduced floor space
requirements, and configuration flexibility of VRLA batteries offer
real benefits to utilities.
GNB Absolyte IIP
batteries are a great fit for utility applications requiring a
relatively large amount of back-up. These batteries offer reduced
service and maintenance, the ability to be stacked to reduce floor
space, and minimal gas evolution. Ranging in capacity 105 amp-hours
to 4800 amp-hours, GNB Absolyte IIP batteries are available in
several configurations including the standard modular configuration,
the "relay rack" configuration, and as single-cell modules for
maximum configuration flexibility.
GNB's Marathon VRLA
batteries are an excellent choice when less back-up power is
required. These 6-volt or 12-volt monoblock batteries are available
in capacities from 28 amp-hours to 180 amp-hours. GNB Marathon
batteries offer the highest power density of any battery on the
market today.
