Telecommunications, Central Offices

Historically, telecommunications batteries have been housed in Central Offices, which are large central switching stations with many switches and other electronics. These installations require a large amount of battery back-up and have traditionally used large flooded batteries since the concentration of telephone equipment is quite large. There has been some movement away from the central office concept toward distributing the loop electronics closer to the home. This trend to distributing the communications electronics has also meant a move toward distributed power. Yet, the central office will still be around for a long time and flooded batteries are a cost-effective means for providing the large amount of back-up power required.

Flooded batteries require a lot of floor space and require frequent service and maintenance to ensure proper operation. Flooded batteries also require special provisions for room ventilation because they give off hydrogen and oxygen gases as part of their normal operation.

A more recent trend in central offices is to use large valve-regulated, lead-acid (VRLA) batteries. The biggest advantage of VRLA batteries is that they do not need service and maintenance nearly as often as flooded batteries. In addition, they occupy less space and do not normally give off hydrogen and oxygen gases.

GNB Absolyte IIP batteries are VRLA batteries which offer the additional advantage of being stackable so that they require much less floor space than flooded batteries. Ranging in capacity from 105 amp-hours to 4800 amp-hours, GNB Absolyte IIP batteries are available in several configurations including the standard modular configuration, the "relay rack" configuration, and as single-cell modules for maximum configuration flexibility.
